My response to an album review of “Drip or Drown 2” by Georgia rapper and singer Gunna, conducted by music critic: theneedledrop.
I respect the point of view of theneedledrop and appreciate his analysis and critique of this record, however I do not share the same point of view as him.
theneedledrop points to a formulaic approach to the majority of the tracks on this record, saying that it is “devoid of any character”. While I agree that Gunna doesn’t take very many risks in his approach to song writing, his choice of beats cannot be questioned. Credit must go to producers Wheezy and Turbo who have produced the majority of this album. Together they have created beats that allow Gunna to croon and drowsily mumble over whilst still providing a point of difference through the use of synths or uniquely warped guitar riffs. One of the best moments on the entire record comes on the Wheezy produced “Who You Foolin”, which uses an outrageous guzheng sample from a track titled “The Singer Sing (Lingren Song)” by Chinese pop singer Tong Li.
Yes, Gunna isn’t a master lyricist, but he is a master of immersing himself amongst unique and adventurously produced beats, that combined, allow him to stand out amongst his peers.
